Conversion of a stone barn into a low energy family home using natural materials.

Women in the Built Environment: Site visit to Ells Farm Barn, OX15 5EE, 5 June 2024, from 11.30am-12.30pm followed by a picnic lunch.

We have an exciting opportunity for the Northamptonshire Women in the Built Environment group to visit site works in progress at Ells Farm Barn, near Bloxham, a project designed by Clare Nash Architecture. Using natural materials this stone barn is being converted to create a low-energy family home. It’s unusual because a new steel structure was not required and the existing timbers have needed little repair. The ridge height has been raised to incorporate a warm roof. Internal wall insulation will comprise of wood-fibre and Diathonite.

Local builders have been used to create new stone details that sit well with the existing. The visit will include an introduction from Clare Nash and a tour from Andy Pinfold builders and the client Rob Pile.

The event will be followed by a free picnic lunch so please bring a chair or something to sit on.

We will meet at 11.30am at EllsFarm, EllsLane, Broughton, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX15 5EE parking is free and available in the front yard.

Please wear site boots and bring your own PPE.

Old Black Lion Site Visit

A site visit to the Churches Conservation Trust's Old Black Lion project in Northampton followed by a guided tour of the local area by archaeologist Andy Chapman.

We have an exciting opportunity for the Northamptonshire Society of Architects to visit site works in progress at the Old Black Lion pub on Marefair, Northampton followed by a guided tour of the local area by archaeologist Andy Chapman.

The £3.5m project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, HM Treasury’s Towns Fund, West Northamptonshire Council, the Architectural Heritage Fund and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation. This is an important local project and strategically placed as part of the regeneration of Northampton Town Centre.

The Old Black Lion pub is next door to the 12th century, Grade 1 listed St Peter’s Church, which was restored by the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) in the late 1990s. Despite periods of use by the community and an active Friends group, in recent years the church has struggled to function as a heritage landmark and venue, and it has subject to break-ins and criminal activity. The historic coaching inn has been empty since 2018, and is now also being restored by the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT). Its hospitality facilities and toilets will support the use of St Peter's as a heritage landmark and community asset. Recent works have involved an archaeological investigation of the courtyard. The site visit is to be generously hosted by contractor Midland Conservation.

The site visit will be followed by a fascinating tour of the nearby sites of the Middle Anglo-Saxon timber hall and medieval Northampton Castle, led by archaeologist Andy Chapman, formerly Senior Archaeologist with Northamptonshire Archaeology. As our starting point will be the Old Black Lion, we will explore the Middle Anglo-Saxon halls and the lost church of St Gregory's and then cross the road to the castle site. This will provide an insight into the medieval topography of the area, with St Peter's church being the one surviving element of an historic landscape.

We will meet at 11am at the front door of St Peter’s Church, Marefair, Northampton NN1 1SW.

Please wear site boots if you have them. The contractor will provide hard hats and vests.

We have been offered a site visit, led by the project manager. Spaces are limited to a group of up to ten on 27 July 2023, 13.00-15.00.

Meeting point will be at 12:30pm at the front door of St Peters Chruch, Marefair.

Site Visit of Old Black Lion pub will be approximately 1 hour.

Site Visit of St Peter’s Church will be approximately 30 minutes.

Site safety boots are required. The contractor will provide hard hats and vests.

Making Vernacular Buildings – Sustainable Solutions

Following the success of the last year's series of events, RIBA Northamptonshire Society of Architects continues to explore the theme of locally sourced sustainable building materials and showcasing examples of contemporary vernacular design and building conservation.

The Sustainable Solutions series aim to explore the techniques, applications, and projects within the region and around the world, from Northamptonshire ironstone, thatch, earth wall, and timber construction (including examples of international) projects whose environmental impacts have reduced through practical consideration of materials, presentations focused on making traditional and contemporary buildings using vernacular methods and materials.

Shoebox Town: Creative half term workshops at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery 26 October 2021

Northampton has a rich history in the shoe making industry and is currently embarking on a large scale masterplan of redevelopment and regeneration. This event led by the Northamptonshire Society of Architects worked with these themes encouraging children to think about their town, and how it could look in the future. Architects from local practices were on hand to help develop ideas into physical models using shoe boxes and a variety of materials.

Thanks to members who volunteered: Tom Jagger and Will Assheton of GSS architects, Will Elsigood and Ruth Stevenson of pHp architects, Adam Smith of Scroxton and Partners, Madeleine Adams of studioMA and Mike Baulcombe from the RIBA East Midlands team.

Most town centre buildings have been investment properties since they were originally built, and some have remarkably long histories that go back five centuries or more. Brian Giggins has been involved with historic buildings for much of his career as a general practice surveyor, building historian and planning archaeologist, as well as studying them as his retirement hobby. His online talk looked at examples from Northamptonshire towns in which evidence of early stone, brick, timber and mud construction have been found, often behind comparatively modern facades.

Northampton Museum has recently been remodelled and extended, more than doubling its floor space by adding a keystone extension that allows the existing building to link through to the surrounding vacant buildings. Project architect Tom Jagger of GSS Architecture presented the completed museum expansion project.
